Specific Density Test (gr/cm3)
The specific density test gives information about the flow rate in the oil environment. It is important in terms of oil insulation.
High-density oils are often a problem in cold weather transformers. When the transformer is left without power, free water accumulates in the tank bottom and ice crystals form in the oil. If the oil density is bigger than ice crystals, ice pieces start to swim in oil. When the transformer is running, the ice melts and causes a short circuit in the energized areas. For this reason, in cold regions, oils of smaller density than ice are preferred.
